Barbershop - Cleveland, Ohio.  SEIU/1199.  First Place Winner of the
Smithsonian Magazine 3rd Annual Photo Contest "Americana" category
.
In 2002, I interviewed for the job I currently have now.   My mother made a promise to God that she would not cut her hair for one year if I was hired.  She pretty much was making a sacrifice in exchange for my success.  I was hired and after one year she cut her hair.  She informed me that it was cut at a nearby unisex salon.  I also decided to get my haircut around the same time and was making it a point to go to the same salon.  On my way there I happened to run into the particular barbershop in the photo.  It was just 8 blocks from my home so I gave them a try.  As I was leaving, I noticed a boy resting on his bike lost in thought.  The individuals in the background just all came together.  The original name for this photo was "Waiting".  However, it became known as "Barbershop" after its debut at the "Unseen Cleveland" Exhibit in 2004.  A Day At The Barbershop.

Dust Trail -  Clavtelasantis, Canada
Seeing this woman working reminds me of how my mother worked for to support her family.  My mother was the first female to be hired for a major road construction company in Puerto Rico.  This reminded me of a similar photo that was taken of my mother when I was a child.

Hand Picked -  Santo Domingo, Rebulica Dominicana When I was a child I saw my peers working after school to be able to help their parents financially or to buy a new toy.  I used to work as a child because I wanted to spend time with my friends and working was a great way to do this.  It was something I did not have to do, however, I wanted to experience life in that aspect.   Seeing these two boys working reminded me of my many friends as a child.
